1974 Corvette W812 Windshield Installation

The manager at one of my good fleet accounts called me today and wants me to install his windshield in a 1974 Corvette 2 door coupe. I have done older gasket sets and lots of the newer style, but none from the 70’s. The book calls for 3.4 hours. Any suggestions?  California Glass Man 7/13/01

Cover your self on the pillar seals. If they haven't been changed they will probably tear if not crumble like corn flakes. Screw on side moldings under the seal. The upper molding has an unusual clip it can be reused if in good shape but has a double catch on each side, not hard but unusual. Cold knife top and sides, if its original, the bottom may be loose, or cold knife all you can and wire the rest. Not a hard job. BG

Make sure cover the top of the fenders with something. The windshield is very close to the fenders, and if you long knife the bottom you will touch the fenders with the windshield. Another thing, I use a 3/8 tape kit with these. Even with a high viscosity urethane you would be hard pressed to get it looking good; (no band on the w/s). The top seems to sit high. The chrome molding is unforgiving, if the glass sits low it will stick out like a sore thumb. As BG says they are an easy windshield , but I think the height of the glass on this is the the key to this car. Nick

You're right, height is the key...Here's what I do, I lay the urethane on the glass and I lay it on high...You can control the height by cutting the nozzle V notch. And then you lay in w\s and DON'T push down...Install the moldings and let the moldings set the height of the w\s..  FXS
