Go to a BMW dealer and order one at the parts department. They are expensive.
Try a BMW parts department. One of our installers bought one a few years back then (in 88) they were $50.00. The tool looks like a flat GM insert tool but is wider and has a roller to push down on the insert as the front part spreads the rubber. You have to find a parts person that wants to help you instead of one that
just wants to sell filters. I took a GM lace lock tool and modified it to work on these inserts, it needs to be widened at the back so the insert fits.

Use thin bone stick and spray silicone.

I've always used my trusty
Chevy insert tool, it is a little off, but with patience and lots of glass cleaner, it works, especially on a warm day. Also, BMW does sell a tool for it.
