Tips
on Using the Extractor Power Tool |
From Jeff at
The Extractor |
Once you master the Extractor, you can virtually cut any windshield
out in less then 4 minutes, with out damage to the shield or
vehicle. It does not take long to learn how to use this tool just
patience. It took me 2-3 weeks. The more you use it the better you
get.
The
Extractor has a variable speed trigger which allows you to go slow
or fast. You don't have to put a lot of pressure on the tool when
cutting just let the tool do the work for you. The Extractor is a
very simple tool, an air gun, a shaft and a blade.
I realize power tools are not for
everyone, but if you are interested here are some tips:
#1
Always make sure the corners of the blades are round and sharp. This
will help to cut the urethane and keep the tool from digging into
the pinchweld.
#2
Take a spray bottle of water and spray down the cutting surface.
This allows the tool to cut more freely through the urethane.
#3
Place the flat part of the blade against the windshield keeping
the 45 degree edge facing the urethane. This will make the blade
suck up against the windshield and follow the contour of the
shield. The blade is flexible so it won't damage the shield.
#4
Start cutting on an angle, as the blade cuts threw the urethane
you can straighten the tool out. This procedure works on the sides
of the shield. You can actually stand to the outside of the
vehicle to do this.
#5
For the top, again start your cut on an angle. Cut until the blade
goes into the urethane approx 1 to 1.5 inches again straighten the
tool to the point where the bottom part of the blade that is
attached to the shaft is about 1/4 of an inch from the interior
roof. Cut along the length of the windshield. At the start of this
procedure if you cut through the urethane and hit the pinch weld
you will notice a different sound and feel. Using the variable
speed trigger by going slow will eliminate this problem.
#6
Simply cut out the bottom of the shield by keeping the sharp part
of the blade at a horizontal position to the urethane. Cut in an
up and down motion 4 inches at a time. Press down, cut, pull up
move it over 4 inches.
Sorry
if this was long winded, but the total procedure should take no
longer then 4 to 5 minutes even on the toughest windshields. I do
suggest you go slow until you become familiar with the procedure.
