A rather simple short process that is often overlooked
during windshield installation is the use of making tape applied to the
glass and body while dry setting the glass.
Simply dry set the glass in the opening, and align
correctly. Then put two small pieces of masking tape across the top of
the windshield and onto the body. Cut the tape between the glass and the
body, and then remove the windshield. You now have easily visible
'marks' that can be used to align the glass when you install it.
By being able to 'eye-ball' the alignment easier
before contact is made with the sealant, you can minimize having to move
the glass much after it is set, which can compromise the seal. This
procedure allows you to ensure the glass is aligned in the opening. This
is especially helpful for one-man sets, and when using the two-part
adhesives, where glass adjustment time is at a minimum.
If the windshield is installed with a wrap around
molding, have it attached before dry setting and marking with the tape.
This procedure also helps in aligning backglasses
and some large quarterglasses and sidelites.
