NGA Seeks ANSI Recognition of Safe Autoglass Installation

Auto Glass Industry Code of Practices/Standard 001-1999

NGA is seeking recognition of its proposed standard for the safe installation of auto glass (ICOPS/001-1999) as an American National Standard under the accredited canvas method of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

Under this canvass method, NGA conducts a letter ballot canvass, or mail poll, of directly and materially affected persons (organizations, standards developers, companies, government entities, consumers and the like) in order to obtain evidence of consensus.

This evidence will be considered by ANSI in the approval of the proposed standard as an American National Standard. The proposed NGA standard for the safe installation of auto glass, ICOPS/001-1999, has been developed in response to the increased use of auto glass in the structural integrity of a vehicle and as a pertinent component of the vehicle's safety system for occupant retention. ICOPS/001-1999 includes specifications for appropriate installer training, replacement materials and parts; and installation procedures.

To obtain materials necessary to participate in this canvass, contact Linda Barnett at NGA at 703/771-7579 or via email at linda@glass.org.

Many people are confused as to the differences in which NGA's Auto Glass Industry Codes of Practices/Standards Committee has been accredited and obtains consensus for proposed standards and/or guidelines for the auto glass industry, called Canvass Process. There is another accreditation which serves the same purpose, called Committee Process.
By opting to accredit using the Canvass Procedure, NGA sends invitations to the industry to participate in the consensus process. A Committee accreditation means that only the members of that Committee may participate in the consensus process.

NGA's canvass is in full swing right now, and it's not too late to participate. Your assistance in this event's awareness is much appreciated. The only criteria for participating is that you must be directly or materially affected by the proposed standard.
