Direct Billing

Direct Billing is generally referred to as the practice of sending invoices for autoglass repair and replacement directly to the insurance company, in lieu of a designated network.

The process of direct billing started taking a back seat when networks and third party administrators (TPA's) became more prevalent in the 1980's, offering consistent bulk discount pricing and electronic billing to the insurance companies.

The networks 'signed up' glass shops, who invoice the networks, who in turn bill the insurance company. Most of you know the rest of the story.

Here are some links to information on this practice.

AGRR Magazine has published several articles on Direct Billing:
The National Auto Glass Consultants Update newsletters regularly contain info on billing direct, with possible solutions and Insurance contact information. February 2000
From The Independent Glass Association:
  • How to Direct Bill By Donovan Trana, Owner of Express! Auto Glass and IGA Board President. Covering the 'who, 'why', and 'what'.  September 2000
Beyond Parts & Equipment is an excellent publication offering subscribers numerous articles and advice.
